Complex recruiting procedures are causing businesses to lose talent

50% of all UK professionals have turned down a job offer because the hiring procedure was too lengthy

Based on a research by Morgan McKinley, that found that while job mobility remains high, many organizations are missing out on talent due to unnecessarily convoluted or long recruitment stages.

A global survey found that two-thirds of companies (65%) had lost a favoured applicant due to an excessively long hiring procedure.

Morgan McKinley UK’s chief operations manager, David Leithead, said that a lack of clarity may slow down recruiting, both internally and when interacting with prospects.

“The inclusion of various stakeholders in the hiring process undoubtedly lengthens it, but it is frequently believed necessary to guarantee the correct hire is made,” he added.

“When a procedure is imprecise, the timeline wanders, or a recruiting organization isn’t upfront about the presence of other applicants – notably internal — jobseekers lose interest rapidly.”

Companies may enhance their chances of keeping a candidate engaged by minimizing the number of interview stages and being transparent about what the process entails and how long it will take from the start, he added.

“Jobseekers want to be extensively vetted, and multi-stage interview processes may, under the appropriate conditions, be just as effective in encouraging someone to join as they are in discouraging them from doing so,” he added.

“The most successful systems use a panel of people who are truly representative of the hiring company.”

According to the report, 84 percent of UK professionals are pondering a job change this year.

“A hazardous component in the Great Resignation is that it fuels itself,” Leithead added. “Attrition in one organisation encourages it to employ from another”.

However, four out of ten (42%) UK professionals said they were unaware of any efforts by their business to keep them.

“The largest factor fueling this is the weakening of relationships between companies and their employees, which occurs when in-person, in-office contacts and communications are at a low ebb,” Leithead continued. Some businesses don’t like to acknowledge it, but video conversations aren’t the same as face-to-face interactions in terms of building relationships and retaining employees.”

Over 4,000 experts and recruiting decision makers from 62 firms were polled by Morgan McKinley.
